New York Cit, a grand stage where life unfolds like a perfectly orchestrated product experience. We’ll embark on an adventure that takes us beyond the tourist’s gaze, immersing us in the ebb and flow of the city’s design, culture, and community.
We visited New York in February of 2018 with my mother-in-law. Susan and I are both arts enthusiasts and the idea of visiting as many art galleries, museums and theaters as possible is what flew us there.

When the City Takes Center Stage: A Dual User Experience
Picture this: New York City as a dual-faced product, catering to its permanent residents and the constant influx of eager tourists. It’s like managing a digital platform for a diverse user base – each with unique expectations, needs, and behaviours. The challenge lies in ensuring both groups find value in the same ecosystem.
When does a New Yorker stop being a tourist and become a New Yorker, can anyone claim to be a TRUE New Yorker?

A Broadway Twist: From Spectator to Immersed Resident
Transitioning from a wide-eyed tourist to a temporary city dweller is a transformative experience. Just like onboarding users to a new product, I found myself navigating the intricacies of urban life. My personal journey took me from being a mere spectator to savoring the awe-inspiring performances of Broadway, including the timeless magic of “The Lion King.” It was a masterclass in blending nostalgia with innovation, mirroring the city’s own ability to honour its past while forging ahead. Of course one could claim a real New Yorker would never go to see a Broadway musical, but why are they there?

New York’s DNA: A Product Evolution Rooted in Diversity
The roots of New York City, as a melting pot of immigrants, shape its rich cultural tapestry – much like a product’s evolution stems from understanding diverse user perspectives. This history lesson in inclusivity teaches us that design should resonate with the myriad experiences that users bring to the table.
Ah, the delicate dance of being both an alluring destination and an intimate community. How do you engage residents without overwhelming them? New York’s dichotomy mirrors this struggle, reminding us that the art of striking this balance is a delicate one.
